Episode 223 of the Toronto Real Estate Musing daily video blog.
George O’Neill visits his childhood home in Belleisle Creek (pronounced “bell-aisle”). Forty years ago, my parents ran a local General Store next door to our home, where the town would shop for groceries, convenience goods, hardware tools and equipment. Today, the store is a lawn.
Change is constant, and not everyone agrees with changes in a neighbourhood. This store is surely missed by some local citizens who now have to drive for at least 20 minutes to shop at similar stores.
Even The Beach in Toronto, with perhaps more historical heritage sites than any other neighbourhood in the GTA, is not immune to its own controversy. Here are some recent examples:
- The recent views at 204 Beech Ave, where a couple demolished a detached house to build a wheelchair-accessible home
- The ongoing debate about the proposed large condo complex south of Queen Street East on Kippendavie Ave
- The proposed 4-storey condo building along the waterfront near Neville Park Blvd to replace three houses along Lake Front Lane
Have you ever gone back to the neighbourhood of your childhood? What was it like?
