Episode 296 of the Toronto Real Estate Musing daily video blog.
George O’Neill enjoyed a one day staycation at the Cheltenham Badlands north of Brampton in Caledon. It’s only a couple hours away from The Beach neighbourhood in Toronto and an educational and natural treasure for kids.
The Badlands is part of the Niagara Escarpment and are made of a series of undulating reddish hills that make the area look like it came from Mars. The hills are made of a soft rock called Queenston shale that has eroded – originally from farming and grazing, currently rain and wind – to form these sandy dunes.
The Cheltenham Badlands are the best example of its kind in Ontario and has been designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Preserve. The Bruce Trail Association maintains the area.
To preserve the area from further damage, visitors are urged to not litter, or dig or slide down the dunes.
To visit the Badlands, head north on Highway 10 and turn left on the Old Baseline Road near the Forks of the Credit River – which, by the way, is also a beautiful spot to explore.
